This blog represents an interesting viewpoint as to why a country may wish to adopt a national language. The French and Quebecers appear more afraid of the encroachment of English than "Islamofascism" on their national identities. What's remarkable to me, is that many who would call for English to be the national language of the U.S., using examples like this Italian one, are of a mind that English is good enough for the rest of the world to speak when doing business. Naturally, it is impossible for some to understand the importance of language in shaping an identity until an other language encroaches upon their own.

“It’s the language spoken in my family, in schools, at work. I am Venetian, Mr President, my language is that of Venice,” Bricolo said in his dialect before his microphone was switched off because he was breaking a rule that states only Italian may be spoken in parliament.
