Professor Salikoko S. Mufwene has written extensively about these subjects, and so I thought a link to his papers on the subject would make for worthwhile reading for the interested reader. His basic thesis throughout much of his work is that English isn't a "language killer," but that the spreading and evolution of languages among groups is much more complex, and the economically-dominant one doesn't always "win" in different times and places where several languages are spoken.
