McElroy Translation has worked with the oil & gas (O&G) industry for nearly 40 years, and the importance of this industry led to the creation of a business unit focused solely on the needs of O&G. I lobbied for the O&G Business Development position because I really enjoy working with people in this industry. I am excited about assisting petroleum and related companies with technical and business translation needs into/from any language. I just got back from attending and exhibiting at the 2006 Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) conference with two of my colleagues, Evan Norman and Lisa Siciliani. To say that I was impressed by this conference is to say nothing. This was not McElroy Translation’s first time to exhibit at OTC, but it was my first opportunity to attend.
People say everything is bigger in Texas and OTC 2006 was strong evidence: held at the Reliant Center in Houston, Texas, there were 59,000 attendees, hundreds of technical sessions, and 2200 exhibitors from all over the world. It was THE U.S. show of the year in O&G industry. The OTC conference has a long history with the number of attendees and exhibitors increasing each year. Every booth was SO different: creative ideas included exhibitor games, huge pieces of equipment, product demonstrations, a happy hour bar, after hours receptions, baseball nights, topical breakfasts sponsored by different countries, and many more. I spent nearly five days in Houston during the OTC show. I keep telling people how impressed I am with the people who serve the O&G industry. They are polite, kind, open, optimistic, smart and funny. I like that relationships are still a fundamental ingredient of doing business in this industry. Making friends in the O&G industry is easy if you remember to just be yourself and be genuine. So far, the greatest thing about working within this industry is meeting and building relationships with so many people from all over the world. If you are reading this and attended OTC this year, drop me a line! Let me know what you thought of the conference or what you particularly like about your segment of this industry. If I haven’t had the chance to meet you, I hope to see you at upcoming conferences! Which conferences are you attending?? Take care! Olga |
